7 Foods Your Dog Should Never Eat
Our dogs are like family to us and have a special place in our hearts. We love to share every bit of our life with them, and sometimes we also share our food bites with them. After all, who can say no to their puppy eyes!
However, you need to rethink this habit. Every time you share your food, you are potentially exposing your fur baby to health risks. Not everything you eat is good for your dog. Even if they are eating your food for months without any problem, they could be having internal health issues that may go undiagnosed.
Therefore, to be a good pup parent, you need to say no to a few food items. Here is the list of toxic foods that your beloved canine should stay away from. You can thank us later!
Foods Your Dog Should Never Eat
You may have heard before too that chocolates are unhealthy for dogs. The content of theobromine in chocolates is harmful to dogs and can cause diarrhoea, vomiting, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures, and in the worst case, even death. It is found in all chocolates but majorly in baking and dark chocolates. Therefore, save the chocolates for yourself.
Avocado is a poisonous food for dogs. Its leaves, fruit, and seeds contain a substance called persin that can cause severe diarrhoea and vomiting in dogs. It is also a choking hazard.
Garlic and Onions
The combo of pungent ingredients such as garlic and onions is toxic for dogs. If consumed in high quantities, it can destroy red blood cells and cause anaemia. It is tricky because you may not see any symptoms when consumed in a lesser amount. However, it can be poisonous when consumed regularly. Moreover, it can lead to bad breath, weakness, vomiting, and loss of appetite.
Grapes and Raisins
There is a potential health threat to dogs with raisins and grapes. It causes them to develop acute kidney injury and anuria (lack of urine production). The active toxin in resins is still unknown, yet its effects are seen in dogs.
Milk is not bad for all dogs. However, some dogs are lactose intolerant, and drinking milk can lead to some digestive problems and discomfort. Their digestive system is not built to break down milk sugar. Dairy products cause vomit and develop gastrointestinal diseases in dogs.
Also, some milk products trigger allergic reactions in dogs that cause itching. Therefore, avoid sharing your dairy products with dogs.
Cinnamon is probably best to avoid. Its oil can irritate the inside of a dog’s mouth and make them sick leading to lower blood sugar, diarrhoea, vomiting, irregular heart rate, and liver issues. When inhaled in powdered form, it can cause choking, coughing, and breathing problems. It’s best if you keep cinnamon restricted to your meals.
You should never feed macadamia nuts to your dog as it can be the most poisonous food for them. It can increase body temperature, cause limbs to swell, and lead to panting, lethargy, walking issues, vomiting. In the worst cases, it can also affect the nervous system severely.
If your dog consumes any of the above toxic food accidentally, consult with your vet immediately.
